6061 aluminium is a typical medium-strength aluminium alloy. Unfortunately, 6061 aluminium is incompatible with additive manufacturing owing to severe hot cracking tendency, which hinders the fabrication of complex-geometry parts of 6061 aluminium via additive manufacturing. Our newly developed CA661M aluminium alloy powders (modified 6061) have been reliably used on various types of selective laser melting equipment (e.g., Bright Laser Technologies BLT-S310, E-Plus-3D EP-M260), with micro-cracks completely suppressed. The as-printed sample exhibits a tensile yield strength higher than 220 MPa, an ultimate tensile strength higher than 330 MPa, and an elongation of over 30%. The heat-treated sample exhibits a tensile yield strength higher than 370 MPa, an ultimate tensile strength higher than 420 MPa, and an elongation of over 14%.
