Current Applications and Challenges of Additive Manufacturing in the Energy and Industrial Sectors
【Abstract】
1.Based on publicly available case and the practical application experiences of Shanghai Electric Group, this report identifies the value-adding scenarios where additive manufacturing (AM) is making a significant impact in the energy and industrial sectors.
2.Although AM technologies have been applied in the energy and industrial sectors, they have not yet achieved large-scale and widespread adoption. This is primarily due to the constraints of “cost-quality-lead time” that are prevalent in large industrial sectors. This report summarizes the challenges encountered in scaling AM in the energy and industrial sectors and proposes corresponding mitigation strategies.
3.In combination with the latest AI-driven data technologies, this report looks ahead to the potential promoting effects and value that these technologies can bring to AM in the energy and industrial sectors.
Enxiang Fan, Master degree from the State Key Laboratory of Solidification Technology at Northwestern Polytechnical University, specializing in metal additive manufacturing. Currently, he serves as the head of the additive manufacturing team at the Central Research Institute of Shanghai Electric, dedicated to the development of the Group’s additive manufacturing research center. He has led nearly ten Group-level research projects, undertaken dozens of horizontal projects both within and outside the Group, and participated in two national projects from the Ministry of Science and Technology. Fan has published nine research papers and filed over 20 patents (with 10 authorized) and has been involved in the evaluation of three national additive manufacturing standards.
Fan has successfully advanced the development and application of additive manufacturing for various products, including wind tunnel compressor casings, turbine blades, gas turbine nozzles, nuclear reactor main pump diffusers, and lithography machine heat exchangers, from pre-research to application demonstrations. He has received two national-level industry awards, two provincial and municipal-level awards, and more than ten Group-level awards.
