Laser Additive Manufacturing of High-Performance Aluminum-Based Components for Aerospace Applications

Dongdong Gu, Professor and Doctoral Supervisor, Vice Dean of School of Materials Science and Technology, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (NUAA). He is a young scholar under the ‘Yangtze River Scholars Award Scheme’ of the Ministry of Education, a recipient of the National Outstanding Young Scientist Fund, and a Humboldt Scholar at the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology in Aachen, Germany. His research interests include laser precision additive manufacturing and 3D printing of high-performance hard-to-machine metal components. He is the associate editor of Journal of Laser Applications, the journal of the Laser Society of America, and an editorial board member of five SCI international journals, including Int J Mach Tool Manuf, Appl Surf Sci, Int J Precis Eng Manuf, Laser Eng, Additive Manuf, etc. He is also a member of the editorial board of the Chinese Society of Mechanical Engineering (CSME), the Chinese Society for Additive Manufacturing. He is the executive member of the Additive Manufacturing Technology Branch of the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society, and the chairman of the Sino-German Bilateral Symposium on ‘Laser Additive Manufacturing and Forming of High-Performance Materials’. He has presided over more than 20 projects, including the ‘Additive Manufacturing and Laser Manufacturing’ special project of the National Key Research and Development Plan of China, the key project of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the NSFC-DFG Sino-German Cooperative Research Project, the Aeronautical Science Foundation, and the National Defence Science and Technology Foundation, etc. He has published 11 SCI-indexed papers. He has published 118 SCI papers with more than 1600 citations, and one monograph published by Springer. He has been invited to give 26 keynote/invited presentations at major international conferences in this field. He has applied for/authorised 16 national invention patents. He was awarded the Green Talents Award of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the Youth Science and Technology Award of the Chinese Society of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the Second Prize of the Award for Outstanding Achievements in Scientific Research in Colleges of Higher Education (Natural Science Prize), and the Second Prize of the Jiangsu Provincial Science and Technology Award.
