AI-Driven Generative Design and 3D-Printed Construction
【Bio】
Weiguo Xu is Professor at the School of Architecture, Tsinghua University, and serves as Head of the Department of Architecture. He is a National Class-1 Registered Architect in China, Director of the Digital Architectural Design Committee of the Architectural Society of China, and Principal Architect of XWG Architecture Studio.
He received his Bachelor of Engineering degree from Tsinghua University in 1983, a Master’s degree in Architecture from Tsinghua University in 1986, and a PhD in Engineering from Kyoto University, Japan, in 2006. Since 1990, he has held academic positions at the School of Architecture, Tsinghua University, including Lecturer and Associate Professor, and was promoted to Full Professor in 2000. He was appointed Head of the Department of Architecture in 2013.
His research focuses on parametric and nonlinear architectural design, digital design, and intelligent construction. He has led a National Natural Science Foundation of China project on Parametric Nonlinear Architectural Design Methods and has long been engaged in the research, development, and engineering application of robotic 3D concrete printing technologies. His representative works include the 3D-printed concrete pedestrian bridge in Baoshan District, Shanghai (2019), and the overall design and construction of the 3D-printed park in Bao’an District, Shenzhen (2021).
He has received awards including an Encouragement Prize at the Daiwa House National Housing Design Competition in Japan. He is the author of Rapid Architectural Design Methods, and his major design works include the Tsinghua Science Park Innovation Building and proposals for the National Centre for the Performing Arts international design competition.
