Ask which additive manufacturing trade show is the biggest and you will usually be told Formnext, on the strength of a single number: exhibitor count. That number is the weakest of the available metrics. Exhibitor totals depend heavily on how an organiser subdivides floor space, its minimum stand size, and whether it counts co-exhibitors separately — three policies that vary between shows and change between editions.
A show’s scale is better described across four measurable dimensions:
This article compares TCT Asia and Formnext on those dimensions using only figures each organiser has published itself. No conversions are applied between the two.

These are results, not projections. TCT Asia 2026 was the 12th edition, held in Shanghai at the National Exhibition and Convention Center across Halls 7.1 and 8.1. [5] Formnext 2025 was held in Frankfurt. [1] [2]
| TCT Asia 2026 | Formnext 2025 | |
|---|---|---|
| Exhibitors | 550+ | 804 |
| Visitors | 44,519 (unique) | 38,282 |
| Floor area | 55,000 m² (show floor) | 49,400 m² (facts page) / “around 50,000 m²” (press release) |
| Internationalisation | International visitors up 50% YoY | 61% international exhibitors; 47% international visitors |
On the two most recent completed editions:
Formnext’s exhibitor lead is real and substantial, and it is the strongest argument against the claim that TCT Asia is now the larger show. Any honest comparison has to carry it. TCT Asia’s own year-on-year growth was 42% in visitors with international attendance up 50% [5], but growth rate is not size.
Internationalisation is reported on incompatible bases — Formnext gives percentage splits of exhibitors and visitors [1]; TCT Asia gives a growth rate for international attendance [5] — so it is presented here as context rather than scored.

Formnext publishes figures for some editions and not others. Rather than reconstruct a continuous series from secondary sources, this section uses only editions where the organiser’s own numbers are available.
| Formnext edition | Exhibitors | Visitors |
|---|---|---|
| 2021 | 606 | 17,859 |
| 2024 | 864 | 34,404 |
| 2025 | 804 | 38,282 |
Sources: 2021 and 2024 figures [3]; 2025 figures [1] [2].
Two things follow, and they point in opposite directions.
Exhibitor count peaked in 2024 and fell in 2025 — from 864 to 804, a decline of about 7%.
Visitor count in 2025 was an all-time high. 38,282 was up 11.3% on 2024’s 34,404. Formnext’s audience is still growing.
This distinction matters more than any single figure in this article. Formnext is not shrinking. Its exhibitor count has come off a peak while its visitor numbers set a record in the same edition. The accurate description is a plateau in exhibitors and floor area alongside continued growth in attendance — not decline.
TCT Asia, over the same period, grew on both measures simultaneously.
Editions between 2021 and 2024 are omitted deliberately: the organiser’s facts page does not publish them, and figures circulating in trade coverage could not be traced back to a primary source.

Any question framed as “in 2027” has to account for the calendar.
| Date | Venue | |
|---|---|---|
| TCT Asia 2027 | 27–29 May 2027 | SNIEC (Shanghai New International Expo Centre), Pudong, Halls N1–N5 |
| Formnext 2026 | 17–20 November 2026 | Messe Frankfurt |
| Formnext 2027 | 26–29 October 2027 | Messe Frankfurt |

Two consequences:
TCT Asia 2027 published scale — projected, not achieved:
| Metric | TCT Asia 2027 (projected) |
|---|---|
| Floor area | 63,000+ m² |
| Exhibitors | 750+ |
| Professional visitors | 55,000+ |
| Concurrent events | 100+ |
| Visitor source countries | 45+ |

Formnext has not published projected figures for either its 2026 or 2027 edition. Formnext 2026’s actual results will not be known until after 20 November 2026.

If TCT Asia 2027 delivers its published projections, the comparison against Formnext’s most recent completed edition would stand as follows:
The crossover does not happen simultaneously across dimensions. Floor area and visitor count would cross first — arguably they already have. Exhibitor count would still be behind, though within single-digit percentage distance for the first time.
Three conditions have to hold for this to be the outcome:
On the balance of published data: TCT Asia already leads on visitors and floor area, and would extend both leads if 2027 projections hold. Formnext retains the exhibitor-count lead, and that gap is the last one to close. A claim that TCT Asia is “the world’s largest 3D printing exhibition” is defensible on two of four dimensions today and on three of four if 2027 delivers — but it is not yet true on all of them, and saying otherwise would not survive a check.
